Asterisks, # headings, tables, code fences and LaTeX math.

Why em dashes became an AI tell
The em dash is a perfectly good punctuation mark. It got a reputation because chat models use it far more than most people type it, often several times a paragraph, and almost nobody types one by hand. On a standard keyboard it takes a shortcut or an autocorrect rule.
So readers started treating a page full of them as a sign of pasted AI text. That proves nothing on its own, but if your writing picked up the habit from an assistant, it is quick to undo.

Commas read most naturally for asides and pauses. If a sentence needs a stronger break, a period or a colon is often better than either. A cleaner cannot make that call for you, so give the result a quick read.
Other AI punctuation it fixes
- Curly quotes. “ ” ‘ ’ become " and '.
- The ellipsis character. … becomes three dots.
- Other dashes. En dashes, minus signs, figure dashes and non-breaking hyphens become plain hyphens.
