Claude (models since August 2026), ChatGPT in the EU (from October 2026) and Gemini mark text through word choice. It cannot be seen, and cleaning characters does not change it. Rewriting the wording does.

Cleaning options

Invisible characters

  • Hidden characters

Zero-width spaces and joiners, byte order marks, soft hyphens, direction marks, tag characters.

  • Special spaces

No-break, narrow no-break and other odd spaces become normal spaces.

AI leftovers

  • AI citations and link tags

ChatGPT citation leftovers and utm_source=chatgpt.com on links.

  • Numbered citations

Markers like [1] or [2, 3]. Off by default, since essays use them too.

Formatting fingerprints

  • Markdown

Asterisks, # headings, tables, code fences and LaTeX math.

  • Em and en dashes

Replaced with a hyphen or a comma.

  • Curly quotes

    “ ” ‘ ’ become straight quotes.

  • Ellipsis character

The single … character becomes three dots.

  • Spacing

Double spaces, trailing spaces and extra blank lines.

Advanced

  • Fancy letters

Fullwidth, ligature and bold-math letters become plain letters.

  • Lookalike letters

Cyrillic and Greek letters hiding inside English words.

  • Emoji

Removes emoji such as 🚀 and ✅.

What ChatGPT leaves in copied text

  • Narrow no-break spaces (U+202F). In April 2025, researchers spotted them in longer answers from o3 and o4-mini. They look like spaces but are a different character. OpenAI said they were a training quirk, not a watermark, and users have reported them in later models too.
  • Citation leftovers. Answers that searched the web carry citation markers. Copied out, they show up as :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}, citeturn0search3 or 【4†source】.
  • Tagged links. Links in answers often end in ?utm_source=chatgpt.com, which tells the site the visit came from ChatGPT.
  • Markdown. The copy button hands over raw markdown, so headings arrive in Google Docs as ## and bold as **asterisks**.
  • House style. Em dashes, curly quotes and the single … character are typical of ChatGPT writing.

The new ChatGPT watermark (October 2026)

On October 5, 2026, OpenAI said it will add an invisible watermark to text from ChatGPT and Codex in the EU, rolling out over the following weeks on every plan. Developers anywhere can switch it on in the API for select models. It is off by default there.

It works by nudging word choices with a secret key, so it adds no characters and no cleaner can remove it. OpenAI notes that editing weakens it: in one test, swapping 10% of words for synonyms dropped detection from about 92% to 66%. For now only approved researchers and expert organizations get detector access. If you need the wording itself changed, that is a rewrite, by hand or with the Humanizer.

How to clean ChatGPT text

  1. Paste your text.

Copy from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, a PDF or a web page and paste it into the box. It is cleaned as you type.

  2. Check what changed.

Open What changed to see every hidden character tagged where it was, plus the dashes, quotes and markdown that were fixed.

  3. Pick your options.

Keep em dashes or turn them into commas, keep link URLs, or remove only the invisible characters.

  4. Copy it out.

Copy plain text, or use Copy for Google Docs to paste headings, bold and lists as real formatting instead of symbols.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT add hidden characters on purpose?
OpenAI says no. When narrow no-break spaces showed up in o3 and o4-mini answers in April 2025, OpenAI called them a side effect of training, not a watermark. Its actual watermark, announced in October 2026 for the EU, uses word choice instead of characters.
Is ChatGPT text watermarked outside the EU?
Not in the ChatGPT app, according to OpenAI's October 5, 2026 announcement, which limits the ChatGPT and Codex rollout to the EU. API developers anywhere can turn the watermark on for select models. Policies change, so check OpenAI's own page for the latest.
How do I remove asterisks from ChatGPT text?
Paste it here with Markdown turned on. Bold, italics, headings and bullet markers become plain text. To keep the bold and headings as real formatting, use Copy for Google Docs.
What is :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}?
A citation marker from ChatGPT's source tracking that sometimes survives copying. It means nothing outside ChatGPT, and the cleaner removes it along with citeturn and 【†source】 markers.
Why do my ChatGPT links say utm_source=chatgpt.com?
ChatGPT adds that tag so websites can see the visit came from ChatGPT. The cleaner removes only that parameter, so the link still goes to the same page.
Will this make ChatGPT text pass an AI detector?
No tool can promise a detector score, and this one does not try. Detectors judge the writing. Cleaning removes characters and formatting; it does not change the words.
Is my text uploaded or saved?
No. The cleaning runs in JavaScript on your device, and your text is never sent to Write It or stored. Like most websites, the page loads analytics that can see the page was visited, not what you typed.
